In that last series, it goes for hours and hours, but watching just a few of them will give you a real insight into how to use Sketchup. One important thing to remember is that Sketchup is based on faces and lines. Your most used keyboard shortcuts will soon become second nature, not too dissimilar to playing a game with a keyboard and mouse. Lastly, to really become proficient and to speed up your workflow you will need to be using the mouse and the keyboard. Groups are also essential to make sure objects don't stick together. This is super useful for repeated geometry and reused things like roof trusses, etc. ![]() If you copy a component and then edit the copy, the original also updates to reflect the changes you made. If you copy a group and then edit the copy, the original remains unchanged. And learn the difference between groups and components. What are you running sketchup on?įirst, and most important advice: LEARN HOW TO USE GROUPS. Obviously the latter method ends up with walls of zero thickness, but is this a big deal when all I want to do is generate ideas? If I do get past this issue, what's the best way to draw a basic house? I've watched tutorials and there seem to be two different methods:ġ) draw each wall as a long thin rectangle and pull it for height.Ģ) draw a large rectangle, the size of the house and pull it up for height. That's very annoying, is it a known feature? Every time I click the select arrow (top left button) the thing just stops functioning for (and I just timed it) 20 seconds. It looks ok so far but I have one serious issue. I tried the browser version but I didn't like that at all so I downloaded Sketchup Make and am trying that instead. ![]() With this in mind I thought I'd try Sketchup. I'm not looking at producing engineering drawings, I just want to show the engineer what we want. We're planning to build a house next year, so I figured I'd have a go at designing something. ![]()
